Active research projects

• Open Innovation in Society »

The research project is funded by the Swedish Research Counsil for four years (2009-2013). The aim is to systematize and conceptualize the notions of "open innovation", "open society", "open access" etc. The phenomenon is discussed from empirical data (interviews, document studies) with the goal to establish theories about societal movements toward openness and their concequences for organizing and value creation within and between regions, industries and individual organizations.

• Open Innovation in Theory and Practice; Toward a Conceptual Framework »

The research project is funded by VINNOVA for four years (2009-2013). The project is focused on ethnographically inspired and practice oriented studies of innovation (observations, interviews, workshops etc). From the intertwined aspects of organizing, intellectual property and IT-infrastructure, the main aim is to develop tools and frameworks for industry actors in the phase of moving toward more "open" and distributed innovation processes. The project has an interactive research approach where the researchers take active part in the facilitation of the process, initiating workshops, mapping actors etc.

On Open Innovation

»Open innovation is the use of purposive inflows and outflows of knowledge to accelerate internal innovation, and expand the markets for external use of innovation, respectively. [This paradigm] assumes that firms can and should use external ideas as well as internal ideas, and internal and external paths to market, as they look to advance their technology.«
